Image Mat is the area around the image. In the Following Document I don’t see any image mat.

Its because the size of the document is equal to the size of the image. But if you resize your document or click on the ‘Full Screen Mode with Menu’ button in the tool bar.

You will get grey color out the end of image, Shown below.
But for some reasons you want the color which is currently grey to be different. Most Artists prefer to have a neutral color like a grey, black, white etc. This gives a little objectivity to the image in the document. What I like to do is make the grey background to Black. To make it Black, click on the Full Screen Mode in the tool bar.

Now I get black background, but there is no Menu Options. Now switch back to the default mode by clicking ‘Standard Screen Mode’ in the Tool Bar. This is the first button in the picture shown above.
To change the background color. Select the paint bucket in the Tool Bar, if its not visible then find the Gradient Tool then click and hold on it, an menu will appear next to it then click on Paint Bucket, shown below.

Now when the paint bucket is selected move it over to the mat (The Grey Background), don’t just click right away, its not going to do anything. Its the safety Photoshop gives, that you don’t accidentally change the background color.
Lets first choose the color which we want to take effect to do this, click on the color picker box in the Tool Bar shown below.

This will open the Color Picker, Select any color which you want then press ok. I chose blue. Now again with the paint Bucket selected move your mouse cursor over the mat (grey background), then Hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard then click. This will apply the color which you selected to the mat. Shown below.

To again choose the default color of your background, then again click on the color picker box. Set the R=198, G=198, B=198. Shown below.

These are the default values for the Mat. After you have set the RGB value, Click ok on the color picker then with your Color Bucket selected in the tool bar go over the background or Mat and Hold Shift + Click to apply the default color.
