The Tools Palette is by default shown in the Photoshop, its located at the left side of the Photoshop. Click here to see the display of it.

You can also move your tool bar to any place, hold left click on your mouse at the top of the tool bar (outlined below) and drag your mouse.

It is a vertical palette, it can’t be done to horizontal. The Tool palette is a very interesting palette because its grouped in a variety of ways. Notice that if you move your mouse cursor over the tool bar it highlights in different colors. The first button is the Photoshop box, clicking it will take you online to Photoshop website, its located at the top of the Tool Bar, highlighted below.

Lets go look at the Tools palette. Notice that our groups are grouped sections. You can see horizontal lines under some buttons. First we have a section of 6 grouped tools. Second we have a section of 8 Grouped Tools. Next is the section of four grouped tools, then another section of four grouped tools and beneath it you have a foreground and a background color (two boxes with black and white color) or color pickers. Then we have Standard mode and Quick mask mode, and after it you will see three buttons of Screen modes, and at the end you have a button to jump to Image ready, this is for web designers for doing web graphics, animations or rollovers, this will import the Photoshop artwork to Image Ready to work on it.

So we see these groupings and what are they. Well the first set of SIX tools shown below are specifically related to selections

Well notice you see a black arrow at the bottom right corner of some buttons. It means that there are other options underneath them. To select the other options, just hold click on the button and it will revel the other options. as shown below.

Each options work in a similar way but not the same.

So I was telling you about the first six grouped buttons. The first one is Marquee tool, this tool is used for selection to select an area within the document, down to it the Lasso tool, its also used for selection. 2nd button is the tool for moving things in the document (the button which has an arrow in it). next we have the crop tool which is used for cropping your image. we have a slice tool which is good for slicing up the web graphics. So these buttons are somewhat related to cropping, selecting, moving.

Now the next 8 grouped buttons in the tool bar. shown below.

I like to call them the imaging tools or marking tools, they makes marks onto the screen. you can draw with the Brush tool , you can fix an image with the Healing Brush . We have more options underneath them which you can check by your self. Keep in mind every time you select an image watch the options bar above. This options bar is connecting to the tool which you are selecting in the tools bar. Notice that each you select a different tool the options bar options changes. So nest I have my Rubber Stamp tool or the Clone tool . The history brush . The paint Bucket and the gradient tool underneath it. Next is the Eraser tool with two kinds of erasers underneath it. The Blur Tool with sharpen and smudge Tools underneath it. Next we have the Dodge Tool with two options Burn and Sponge. So these are some kind of photographic tools, imaging tools like making marks on the Screen.

Next for buttons are the text tools with 3 underneath options for writing Text. Next we have the Path selectors. Next we have the Pen tool, this is for drawing shapes for masks and paths. Next is the rectangle tool.

Now come to the next four grouped tools. we have our Notes tool, underneath is the audio annotations tool. Next we have our Eye Dropper tool to get the image of where you are in the image. We have the hand tool and the Zoom tool.

So the tool bar is complex and we are going to look deep into it. Its just important now to get the aspect that what are the groupings for.

Now what if you want to hide your Tool bar. there is no close tool on the Toolbar. To do so go to the ‘Windows’ menu then click on ‘Tools’, shown below.

This will hide your Toolbar, to reappear it again. repeat the process. go to windows menu then click tools. and again if you want to hide all the palettes on your screen except the document window then press TAB key on your keyboard.

So that’s the tool bar we looked in very roughly.
