Run Adobe Acrobat and choose Edit > Preferences. Select Internet from the list on the left, uncheck the “Display PDF in browser” box, and click ok. From now on when you click a PDF file, you’ll get the File Download box. Choose Open, and Acrobat Reader will display the file in its own window. Better yet, when you close the reader, it’ll close properly and won’t live on in memory, i.e. It will not run in background.

If you like viewing PDFs in your browser, you can easily banish Acrobat from memory when you’re done. Just right-click the Windows Taskbar at the bottom of the screen and choose Task Manager. On the Processes tab, select Acrord32 or acrobat.exe, and click the End Process button.
