When you shop at price comparison sites, you might see the letters OEM next to some computer goods, such as hard disks or DVD drives. Almost always, those goods cost less than those without these letters next to them.
So what does OEM means?
The acronym stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. If you buy a hard disk, CD, or DVD drive labeled as OEM, you may be buying a bare drive without software, cables, instructions, and extra hardware, such as screws or rails. If you have limited experience installing this kind of hardware, spend the extra money on the full commercial kit from a retailer.
