When anything vexes you in Windows, the direct solution is usually to turn it off. Why not? Such features should be optional. On my computers, I find AutoComplete to be annoying; I’m startled when some other Web page spelling or suggestion comes up. No problem. AutoComplete can be turned off (or at least curtailed) by following these steps:
1. Open the Control Panel’s Internet Options icon.
2. Click the Content tab.
3. Click the AutoComplete button.
The AutoComplete Settings dialog box appears. Did you notice the two happy buttons labeled Clear?
4. To turn off AutoComplete, uncheck everything.
Click. Click. Click. Click.
5. Also click the Clear Forms and Clear Passwords buttons. That removes anything stored in AutoComplete’s memory. In fact, you can just perform this step (and Steps 7 and
to remove things stored in AutoComplete’s memory.
Did you see the annoying message about the Clear History button? How hard would it have been for Microsoft to add a second Clear History button right there in the AutoComplete Settings dialog box? It was apparently too hard, so you must exercise your mouse-clicking muscles.
Click OK.
7. Click the General tab.
8. Click the Clear History button.
Now, everything is gone from AutoComplete.
Theoretically, this technique should work. No previous addresses or other information appear on the Address bar as you type. If something does, you can see the next section for a more direct and drastic solution to the problem.
Using AutoComplete for Web addresses means that Windows remembers any address you have typed or the addresses of all Web pages you have visited, which can be recalled as you type new addresses.
Using AutoComplete for forms means that any Web forms you complete that have similar fields (Name, E-mail Address, and Telephone, for example) are also filled in automatically as you visit various Web pages.
Of course, the Forms option also covers entering information in search engines. If you have been searching for ladies’ undergarments in extralarge gentlemen’s sizes, that too appears if the Forms item is checked.
