I got this printer about a month ago as I was tired of buying black ink cartridge after black ink cartridge for my old inkjet. I was amazed at how fast this unit prints and the quality is great too. It’s also quite small making it easy to place just about anywhere.

I recently purchased this printer (not from NewEgg since the price was the same at the time as local vendors) to replace my dead HP 932C inkjet of 6 years (RIP) of which I paid nearly the same price.

For non-color basic printing, this is IMO the best for the dollar in terms of speed and quality, even though it’s a “simulated” 1200dpi. Whether you want to print resumes or manuals for software, this thing gets the job done extremely well.

I chose HP vs. other laser printer manufacturers based upon past experience of longevity and durability, even though it cost a little more that comperable lasers.

The only problem is the lack of documentation that comes with it and the limited instructions on the CD. However, if you can load paper and change paper in your office laser, you can manage this.

My only regret is not waiting a little longer for NewEgg to drop their price before purchasing. That makes me think HP has a successor coming up for the Holiday 2005 spree, although I’m sure that will be more money anyway.

This printer is perfect. I wanted a solution for my wife (who is a teacher). She prints alot of stuff for her classroom. The inkjet was killing us in inkjet cartridges. She has printed alot of documents over the last 2 months and we are still on the same toner cartridge that came with the printer. It’s fairly queit and compact as well. Only complaint is that it could hold more paper, but that is pretty trivial considering the price of this laserjet printer. Newegg continues to be awesome.

  4. Duck Says:

I have a small business and this has been my main printer for a while now. It is plugged into a Mac network via an Airport Extreme base station so the only computer you need on is the one sending the print job. Handles all jobs with ease: envelopes (though the 2nd tray can only hold a few at a time), photoshop mockups, long documents. If you’ve got a workgroup of up to 6 computers this is a really great little value.

  5. Matt Says:

Compared to larger laser printers, this printer warms up very fast. From a cold state, it will warm up and you will see the first page coming out within 10 seconds of clicking “print.” This is even better than a lot of inkjet printers out there. I’m also amazed at the toner efficiency. I’ve had the printer for more than two years and it’s still going strong under moderate to light use. Laser printers are far more cost effective than color inkjet printers no matter what. Even if you need to occasionally print a photograph, a laser printer should be your primary device. (I have both the HP LJ 1020 and a Canon inkjet photo printer.)

  6. Tim Says:

didn’t know I wanted to connect it to a server when I purchased it, but then I learned that I couldn’t connect a server to it. Oh well. I guess I didn’t need the server connection anyway. The paper tray is closed in all the photos. If you plan on using paper in it, then you might want to imagine the paper tray in the open position. I don’t think it’s as quiet as some claim. I use it in my office/bedroom. When I’m printing late at night I am always afraid of waking my wife with the noise so I have to decide whether or not the print job can wait until the morning.

I use a Laserjet 1012 in my office. It is an older version of a 1020 and it works great. I ordered this 1020 for a co-worker since his wonderfull Epson clogged up like they all do. It is great for the office. Quick, not too loud, and minimal upkeep with the toner cartridge. Very easy to set up. his DOES NOT come with a USB 2.0 cable and is USELESS without one. HP labels this cable as an ‘Accessory’ but when something is ‘Required’ for a product to fuction even the slightest bit, it is NOT an accessory. HP (and Newegg) should make this clear in their advertisements. Buy the USB cable here or at (insert retail giant) for less than ten bucks or you’ll pay near thirty at (insert electronics store). I like this printer, but not the detour to get it working. I’d love to see car manufacturers start selling cars a little cheaper, but without the battery cables. What? You want battery cables? OK, thats an extra six hundred dollars.

  8. Calisto Says:

Set-up and installation was not too troublesome, once complete, I started printing immediately without incident. Clear, crisp print; econo-mode isn’t grey, it’s a shade of black-easy to read! And newegg has the best price on toner! It took a visit to the HP website to learn what to do when the challenge box message read, “XP logo not detected. Want to continue anyway?” The visit to HP indicated to select “Yes, Continue”. Outside of that, it’s a great choice. You cannot go wrong with an HP. Other manufacturers split the drum from the toner and that will cost $$$ down the way. HP is reliable.

  9. Phil Says:

What a positive experience! The price was about 30% less than the national electronics stores, the order process was easy, product was shipped promtly and the tracking info on your website was extremely helpful. If all your customers are as happy as I am, I want to buy stock in your company.

  10. NA Says:

I manage an inventory company and we put this printer out in the field. Under constant printing for 7 hours a day about 3 days a week it has held up amazingly well. After almost a month I still haven’t had to change the toner. Can’t beat it for the price, speed, and size.

  11. IG Says:

A small laser jet with excellent print quality for its class. The 1020 is very easy to hook-up (remember to buy a USB cable) and network. Comes with a full toner cartridge. Won’t give it five stars until I have owned it for a few months. My last laser printer/copier printed great for a month and ever since that point even with a new drum and thorough cleaning; its printed with lines. I have had that printer for a year, now it only serves as a copier/fax when quality is not a factor. Many people have been complaining that this printer is not compatible with printer servers. I can’t comment as I don’t use a stand alone print server. Every computer in my house is networked and by using my computer as the printer server I had each computer in the house (4 total) printing off the 1020 in about 15 minutes. This is the only printer I have ever used that has had no problems with XPs networking. Unlike my last printer/copier, which among other problems, was the most difficult printer in history to network.

  12. Noel Says:

I researched low cost laser printers in PAINFUL detail after getting burned on a horrible Konica Milolta 1350W. It was a decent printer with absolutely insane toner and drum costs. The LJ 1020 offers superior quality in this class, remarkabke speed and outstanding cost for toner replacement. Some Brother laser printers have slightly cheaper toner, but hte HP offered the most bang for hte buck. As a bonus, I had it networked to both of my computers in less than a minute using the “Share This Printer” function in Windowd XP. Although it’s not technically a network printer, I can print to it from any computer on my little home network. Bonus! Don’t be fooled by the initial low coast of some printers. The long term cost per page and overall quality is much more critical. This pronter hits a home run with both.

  13. Shock Says:

This printer is excellent. The software is a breeze to setup and the printer supports manual 2 sided printing, which is always nice to save on paper. I got this printer to print my medical school notes and it does it fast and efficiently. Definitely recommended!

  14. John Says:

Great little printer, currently using for a home office. Super-small footprint, quick and easy to set up, but I would have liked to have PCl support. For the price, though, this printer is excellent. Reliable, no ghosting, fairly quick. some paper-curl, which is due to the small footprint. No PCL support. This is a great little printer for the price, especially when printing 40+ page jobs. Granted, its not as fast as the 4000 series, but those are seven to ten times the price. Forget inkjets for black and white, this laser is far superior.

  15. Jhonny Says:

This printer is affordable and economical. It does not burn through the toner like some other cheap laser printers do. It prints very fast and is a breeze to set-up. Works on Mac OS and Linux too with alternative drivers. A big workhorse printer in a small, attractive package. Tends to curl papers it prints, be sure to use thicker Laser paper only, using cheap plain copy paper will not work well. It also isn’t the fastest printer in the world, and the paper tray is not concealed.
For about a hundred bucks, I don’t think you can beat this deal. It recommend this over any of the toner hogging Samsung models.

  16. Savier Says:

he output quality is superb, printing is quiet (comapred to my Canon inkjet), and there is minimal paper curl on reasonable weight paper. Plus Newegg had it on my doorstep the next day via FexEx Saver. At this price point, none. Just make sure you have a USB cable because it doesn’t come with one. I also suggest installing the latest drivers from HP’s web site instead of those on the enclosed CD. My bad for not checking closer before buying this printer. Easy 5 if you won’t ever need to use it with XP64. From HP’s support web site “Hewlett-Packard will not be providing X64 Edition drivers for the following printers.” The 1020 is in the list.

  17. Sencha Says:

Had this printer for about 3 months now. Output is great, no noticable defects. Noise level is acceptable. First page prints in approx. 15 seconds, half of that for all subsequent pages. Paper tray could have larger capacity. This printer was 99.00 was I bought it a few months ago with a 50.00 rebate. And YES, I did get the rebate from Samsung, unlike Plextor…

  18. Giff Says:

Fast initial print. Priced like an Inkjet, but with these advantages: – More pages per minutes – Much cheaper in ink/toner replacement Bought a bunch of these for everyone at the office. Not a single complaint. Liked it so much I bought a personal one for my house. Definitely get this if you will be doing any amount of basic info printing. Get a specialized photo printer for the color/photo prints – the only disadvantage would obviously be shelf-space.

  19. Ian Says:

I work with half a dozen different laser printers with work, and I must admit this one performs as well if not better than some professional office machines we have that cost 5X as much. The first page is certainly quicker. If you’re looking for a reasonable printer, skip the inkjet and go straight to this laser. Quit reading reviews and just buy it. It is a good bang for the buck and you won’t be disappointed.

  20. Dealer Says:

This printer does a marvelous job in printing in black and white. It is unbelievably fast, when I clicked the print button it didn’t take 5 seconds if that and it was done, it screams through the print process and the quality is great for what it is intended for.Truly a great buy, the price is way more at the big box stores plus gas and time to go get it so I saved 60.00 through Newegg delivered to my door and in my hands. The shipping was great
Are you kidding at this price this baby ROCKS. Only one small thing, it does not include the USB cable, so make sure you order one if you don’t have one or you will have to go to your computer store to get one,it is USB on one end of the cable and kind of a modified square plug on the other end of the cable. Anyone would be making a mistake if they wanted this printer and didn’t order it from NEWEGG. They do it right everytime and if you ever need them they are thier for you and will listen and most of all they always do the right thing for the customer. That means a lot too me. Thanks to everyone at Newegg, you are the only supplier I use, but I like FEDX shipping the best, gentler handling during shipping.

  21. DAN Says:

It’s VERY small! I’ve only printed a few documents and webpages but the print speed is very very quick. it seems to only take around 5 seconds to print the first page and after that first page is printed each following page is printed one after another with no pause. It should have some kind of cover for the paper holder. It looks cheap to have the paper just sitting flat like that and in plain site. It looks like dust is going to build up after a while in the paper tray. This is my first laser printer I’ve used since the mid 1990′s. This one is much faster, much lighter, and has superior print quality compared to laser jets ten years ago. The print quality is also unmatched by many ink-jet printers… If you print mostly text, this is an AWESOME printer to try out for cheap.

  22. Sincity Says:

It’s very fast and very quiet! Includes a full toner cartridge($xx value!) that will last about 2,000 pages! Very cost effective. I’ve tried bubblejet, cartridge, and inkjet….and I say that Toner LaserJet cartridges is the ONLY WAY TO GO! Being a very fast printer may not be such a good idea around kids! Makes it too easy for the kids to print copys just for the sake of printing! At least it comes with a full toner cartridge that’ll print about 2,000 pages.
Toner cartridge here at NewEgg is only around $xx bucks for 2,000 pages. I set my printer settings to “economy”…and my pages still come out fast and sharp. I even printed pictures in 1200dpi mode…and they look great in Black&White! This printer is great for everyday use; too bad color laserjet printers go for around $400 or more! Fast & Quiet Printer! All i need now is a good Scanner; and then I’ll have a functioning Office! My Printer shipped here in less than 24hrs! New Egg Rockz!

  23. Lifly Says:

Very Xp friendly and very fast and quiet! HP website has Vista Drivers for the older HP models; but they say they will have Vista Drivers in the future! I’m confident they have one in a few months…but if you can’t wait that long…buy an old HP printer that’z Vista friendly NOW! I’ve printed over 200 pages thus far(in Xp Home) and it has performed flawlessly! I’ve even shared it over my network with no problems!

  24. Versee Says:

Howto Adjust Printer to Print in Windows Vista: 1)Install the CD-rom that came with the Product; even though it’s meant for Xp…it will still work in Vista! 2)Goto Start/Printers then Right Click on HP LaserJet1020; then Left click Properties. 3)The HPLaserJet1020 Properties window should have popped up. Click the Advanced Tab. 4)Click the Print Processor Tab.Select Print Processor as >>>IMF. Select Default Data Type as>>>RAW.Click OK. 5)Goback and click the General Tab. Click the Print Test Page button on bottom right of window. Enjoy! Your printer should have successfully printed a test page in Windows Vista!

  25. Geek Says:

Much faster than expected. Better quality printing than expected. Hope I see some custom trays out soon. Got more than my money’s worth. Newegg shipped it to me in 2 days for $single digit. Small, good for space saving but bad for paper handling. As soon as paper is feed it has to make a near 150 degree turn and gets well heated by the tight space. After print job is done the two top right corners hang off in the air resulting in curled edges after the paper cools. I’ll probably rig something up for the paper to cool flat. Two solutions to this problem. Get better paper (laser paper) or rig your “done” tray so the paper cools flat and dosen’t curl. Tiny Form Factor. Fast Startup time. 10 seconds to first page. Simple set up. Versatile printer driver. Great print quality for any machine near this price. As always, NewEgg delivered the right product fast!! Customer service friendly, knowledgeable and courteous as usual. Great little machine for home/office.
